Another Earth // fine jewelry designer Alina Abegg takes TPP to other-worldly dimensions with her Cosmic Escape collection
Entering Alina’s Berlin abode is like immersing yourself in the geometrical perimeter of a gemstone. Similar to the healing effect of crystals, Alina’s home oozes calmness amidst the city center. Her French bulldog, Nugget, greets us by the door and accompanies us into the jade colored living room, accented with one of a kind art pieces and an array of color coordinated books. The ceiling-high French doors open up and seamlessly lead you into the adjacent dining room. The painted walls exude a breath of amethyst and we are immediately taken in by the life-sized sketch of a jaguar, it’s pattern perfectly complementing the set of animal-print chairs in the living room. It is safe to say that the furnishing of this immaculately designed yet totally livable home is, in fact, no coincidence, but rather a work of art.
Although Alina tells us that going into jewelry wasn’t her initial plan, we are very glad that she did. Since the launch of her brand AA Jewels in 2016 she has left quite the impression in the fine jewelry world and adorned women with her other-worldly, space inspired pieces. Alina tells us that Diane Kruger chose to wear her Saturnation Hoops, one of her very first designs, at the Golden Globe Awards that year. “I was over the moon and very honored. Personal highlights were also seeing inspiring women like Rita Ora, Olivia Palermo and Gigi Hadid wearing my AA Jewels,” she adds on.
“Looking back at it now,” Alina goes on to say, “it might seem a little crazy since I had little experience and no connections within the fine jewelry industry. It alone took about a year to find the right team and suppliers.”
All of Alina’s pieces are handmade and produced in Germany, representing Alina’s roots as well as the country’s fine craftsmanship.
Alina’s first collection, Cosmic Escape, is deeply inspired by the mystery of our universe with a 90s touch. Her pieces are brought to life through a combination of geometric shapes and unique, multi-colored gemstones into precious UFOs, planets and all things out of this world – our personal favorite being the Alien Pinky. Alina just launched a limited-edition collection that recreated AA Jewels most popular Alien pieces from her Cosmic Escape collection in 9kt gold. “Customers can choose earrings, necklaces and fun pinky rings in different space-inspired color ways,” she tells us.
Growing up between the UK, Switzlerand and Germany, Alina tells us that she has always been interested in creating things and had a passion for art, decor and fashion from a very early age. “Since I was a little girl I was always fascinated by gemstones,” she tells us. Throughout her university studies in London – fashion business to be exact – Alina started developing ideas for jewelry pieces which ultimately lead her to apply at the Gemologist Institute of America in New York. “After the first day in this program I somehow knew that this was what I wanted to do and luckily it worked out,” Alina tells us. That isn’t to say that it’s been all sunshine and roses. Starting and running your own business can be challenging, especially in a male dominated industry, but Alina has proven that patience, perseverance and hard work pays off.
“You have to believe in what you do, because if you don’t, why would anyone else?”
Although Alina has had moments (and occasionally still does) where she feels she is not being taken serious, she understands that in the beginning it was largely due to her young age an inexperience. Today, whenever she gets overwhelmed, Alina likes to do yoga or go for a long walk with her dog, Nugget. “I also recently started to do a little bit of meditation – let’s see if I’ll stick to it,” Alina adds on.
For Alina, a born fire element, being self-employed comes natural, for Aries are the most entrepreneurial of signs. She goes on to tell us that “it’s not always easy to be your ‘own boss’ but at the end of the day you are accountable for yourself and if you want to be successful you need to prioritize.” She explains that “in the age of social media people tend to think that everyone is living these amazing lives and that they (the viewer) are the only ones who are struggling.”
The truth is, and this we all agree on, that everyone fails and everyone will fail again. Having manifested this understanding, Alina stresses “not to be afraid. Failure is a part of your road to success, even if it hurts sometimes.”
We cut our time short as we rush to Tegel airport in attempts to catch the earlier of the two flights we had booked that day. As we take off into the sky we cannot help but daydream about Alina’s magical pieces. AA Jewels second fine jewelry collection is set to launch on AlinaAbegg.com this summer. We don’t know where the journey will take us, but after Alina’s Cosmic Escape we couldn’t be more excited.

What’s something you’ve always wanted to learn?
Thats a tricky one. But I’d say that I love working with Tourmalines, as they come in a wide and beautiful colour spectrum. Recently fell in love with Alexandrite, which is a stone that changes its colour between purple and green, depending on the light it is exposed to. It reminds me a little bit of the ‘mood rings’ I had when I was a child.
